How Brandly uses fonts

To match the typography in your design file and make the text editable at the same time, we need all of the fonts used in your file.

When you save a file as a PDF, you are essentially packaging all of the components of your design into a single file. Think font information, color information, and any other settings you have used. This ensures that whoever is viewing your file on their own device is able to view it as you intended. However, the Adobe PDF format only stores the font information necessary to support the finite set of characters used in a given file - that's what makes it "portable" - the "P" in PDF.

To create any letter, number, or character in a given font, we need to install the same exact font family onto our computers.

Handy font and typography definitions

Good typography has the potential to fortify a brand, make your product interesting, and add punch to your brand message. Here are a few common definitions to help you better understand fonts and typography:

  • Typography is arranging letters to make them look legible and pleasing to the eye.
  • A typeface is a font family. It is a group of fonts sharing the same design characteristics.
  • A font is the specific variation of a typeface, such as Garamond, bold, size 12. The font family is Garamond, the style is bold, and the size is 12pt.

Tip: A typeface is what you see and a font is what you use.

Including fonts in your design file

When you save your file without converting the text to outlines, you include fonts in your file, thanks to the Adobe PDF format. When you convert fonts to outlines in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, you erase all of the embedded font information and render the text uneditable. If you want to be able to make a file editable in the Brandly application, do not convert fonts to outlines.

Tip: Text before it is outlined in Adobe Illustrator has a line underneath the characters and you can edit the text. The box around the text allows you to move the text block around on the canvas and scale the font size. After text is converted to outline, each character has an outline around it.

Missing fonts

Brandly has an extensive collection of fonts for most common typefaces. If we do not have your font, you will encounter a "font missing" error while uploading your PDF into our system. If this happens, please contact us at help@brandly.com, and we will look into obtaining the missing font(s).
